MEANDER TREEHOUSE
Swanton Novers, Norfolk
Commissioned as one of two Treehouses for the Astley Estate in Norfolk, Meander was designed to sit amongst ancient woodland , and takes its inspiration from its woodland context. The structure of the tree itself, its bark and the heartwood.
The curved exterior wall is wrapped in 'bark' of Black Diamond Richlite, detailed to reflect the slant of the tall slender trees around it, and with tiny windows capturing small contemplative views of the trees, and illuminating the interior with notes of woodland light.
A curving steel spiral staircase leads to the entrance at the heart of the building, and here the form is clad in timber, like a section through the core of the tree. The timber cabin sits on a sculptural substructure of trunks and branches of steel.
