The Stargazer 's Story
Visitors to Ardgour Estate's Cuil Moss Cottage can enjoy stargazing by night and wildlife watching by day from the comfort of their Award Winning woodland room. Our Stargazer won 'Shed of the Year 2017' in the Eco Category . and was designed to be off grid, with solar powered LED lighting and its full\y insulated with sheep wool.
Cuil Moss holiday cottage sits on the historic Ardgour Estate in the West Highlands and is just a stroll from Salachan beach with stunning views up to Ben Nevis. 5 Star accommodation, elegantly furnished and well appointed, the cottage has everything guests could possibly need for a relaxing holiday, but its owner, Annie, felt there was just one thing missing...
The woodland next to the cottage is full of wildlife and she wanted to create somewhere cosy where visitors could sit with a nightcap and stargaze into the wee small hours under the Highland Dark Skies or watch the deer , birds and red squirrels in the woodland in the early mornings and still evenings. Annie got in touch with us and gave us the perfect excuse to design and build the tiny, off grid rotunda.
The little 2.9m diameter timber Stargazer sits off the woodland floor on eight little 'milk stool' galvanised steel legs and is clad in bands of larch. The double doors open onto the spruce panelled interior, illuminated overhead by a large double glazed skylight set into an angled roof. Four discreet little horizontal slot windows positioned at different heights frame the woodland views.
A single 12v recessed light in the window surround is powered by a tiny 50w solar panel and battery, and the characterful Anevey Frontier Stove, with a hot plate for your kettle, heats the little building. The sheeps wool insulation in the floor, walls and roof keeps the heat in for a cosy evening under the stars..
Keilder Water Stargazer
Take a look at our Stargazer at Keilder Water. This version has a round, stargazing skylight and a floor to ceiling window for a big view across the lake.
Sauna, Music Pod, Bird Hide...
The Stargazer can be the perfect Creative Space.
Our first Woodland Room has been specially fitted out for stargazing and as a wildlife hide too, but it can be designed to offer a variety of options including a garden sauna or music pod. We can customise the design with options for glazing including rooflight size, slot windows, larger windows, or patio doors if preferred.
We can offer options for timber cladding and curved decking can be supplied to compliment the building. The interior can be fitted out with a wood burner for a cosy room , or detailed for use as an outdoor sauna cabin with stove and curved benches.
