Standard WAVE dimensions (Layouts 2,3 & 4)
External Building Dimensions : 5.3m x 3.2m (16.9m²)
Additional Decking Area : 5.8m²
The WAVE requires minimal groundworks and is transported to site, complete; its galvanised steel underframe has adjustable feet, which are secured to pre-prepared concrete pads. The minimal site work and environmental impact, coupled with its ability to function off grid makes the cabin suitable for a variety of terrains and remote sites.
Integrated solar p.v. panels are designed to sit within the brise soeil and these supply power for both the 12v lighting and sockets for essentials, such as laptops and mobiles. Hot water and cooking facitlities are fuelled by bottled gas. The battery, logs and gas bottles are stored in concealed, external storage space to the rear of the building. Hand built compcat kitchen cabinets are designed to incorporate a 12v fridge, sink and gas hob . A wood burning stove provides extra heat for cooler evenings and months - the cabin is highly insulated and can be in use all year round. Compost toilets can be fitted if desired.
The WAVE Eco Cabin
Launched at Grand Designs Live, London 2015, the WAVE is a flexible, off-grid, eco cabin. It has been designed to be scaleable and to accommodate a variety of layouts; it conforms to the planning regulations for caravans, making it ideal as holiday accommodation. The 12.5m² WAVE shown above has external dimensions of 5.3m x 3.2m and can be fitted out to provide cosy, self contained accommodation for two with fitted double bed, shower room, wood burner and compact kitchen; it has an additional 5.8m² of timber decking. The cabin can be extended lengthways or widthways to provide extra rooms as illustrated in the One Bedroom WAVE layout below.
The WAVE can meet permitted development criteria and so is suitable as garden room, studio or office.
The cabin's name is inspired by its distinctive red cedar cladding and decking which curves over the building as a continuous rolling wave. On our off grid model, solar panels are set into the brise soleil and, to the side and front, architectural panels available in a range of colours and materials compliment the curving cedar roof. To the front of the building the floor to ceiling glazing and timber decking for indoor-outdoor living. A variety of fixtures, fittings and finishes can be specified for the WAVE interior including wood burning stove, compact kitchens and shower room. For exteriors, a range of timber cladding and architectural panelling can be specified; various glazing options are also available.
You can read more about the WAVE's Off Grid design features and the WAVE's construction details below.
The drawings below shows Layout 7 in more detail. The 25m² WAVE has a separate double bedroom and shower room off the living/kitchen space. An additional patio door leads onto the extended decking from the bedroom and discreet, full height storage lines the wall of the shower room. Glazing has been added at either end of the building and an extra full height slot window in the kitchen space.
We individually design and build compact kitchens, fitted beds and built in storage for each of our small buildings. You can see a selection of fixtures, fittings and finishes used in our buildings here.
WAVE Off Grid
All construction material are selected for their efficiency, durability and sustainability and their contribution to the long term integrity of the cabin. The wall, roof and floor section, from inside to outside, consists of: Nordpan Spruce 3-ply CLT panels; 150mm sheep wool insulation, allowing year round use; high performance breathable Bitroc sheathing board; and Solitex exterior membrane. The roof and rear of the building are protected by a weatherproof layer of cranked-curved, profiled tin beneath the timber cladding.
The exterior cladding materials are specified for their durability and clean lines. The show model uses Untreated Western Red Cedar cladding, which wraps around the building in slatted, curving panels and forms the decking to the front. The sides and front walls are clad in Formica’s Vivix architectural panels in blue-black ‘Terril’, which define and form the inner building and compliment the curved roof. There is a huge choice of timber and acrchitectural cladding materials available
Each WAVE interior is lined in pale Spruce cross laminated timber panels for a natural feel and has a timber floor. They can be designed to provide a variety of accommodation types.
